NEC 2023 QUICK GUIDE

The rules electricians and homeowners actually look up, in the order people actually need them — what each one says in plain English, and why it exists. Search it, filter it, bookmark it.

Read this first

This is a finding aid, not the code. It paraphrases where a rule lives so you can go read the real text faster — it does not reproduce it, and a paraphrase is never a substitute for the published NFPA 70 document or for a permit and an inspection.

Washington does not adopt the NEC unchanged. The state amends it in WAC 296-46B, and Seattle and Tacoma administer their own programs. Always confirm against the edition your jurisdiction has actually adopted before you rely on anything here — adoption dates lag the NEC cycle, and your AHJ has the final word.

WHY DOES THIS RULE EXIST?

Most of the code is written in response to something that already happened to somebody. We turned the ones with the best stories into playable 16-bit mini-games — get the code right and your character walks away.
