What electrical work in Puyallup actually looks like

Puyallup and South Hill are the Pierce County anchor of our service area. Downtown Puyallup and the older streets near the fairgrounds have pre-1960 housing with the wiring problems that come with it, while South Hill is largely 1990s-and-newer subdivisions with modern services and full panels. The valley floor adds outbuilding and agricultural feeds. Unlike Tacoma, Puyallup electrical work is inspected by Washington State L&I.

The housing stock we run into here

  • Pre-1960 downtown and near-fairgrounds homes with ungrounded circuits and original service equipment.
  • South Hill subdivisions from the 1990s onward with modern services but no spare breaker spaces.
  • Valley-floor properties with outbuildings, shops and long underground feeder runs.
  • Homes on well and septic where a generator connection also has to carry the pump.

Puyallup questions

Frequently asked — Puyallup

Is Puyallup inspected by the city or by the state?

Washington State L&I handles electrical permits and inspections in Puyallup — unlike Tacoma, which runs its own program. If your project spans both jurisdictions, we keep the permits straight.

I am on a well. Can a generator run the pump?

Yes, but it has to be sized for it. A well pump's starting current is much higher than its running current, and that is what determines the generator and the transfer equipment — not the pump nameplate. We size it off the actual starting load so you do not end up with a generator that stalls every time the pump kicks on.

Do you wire shops and barns on the valley floor?

Regularly. It means a load calculation, a properly sized and buried feeder at the correct depth with the right conductor type, a subpanel with its own grounding electrode, and receptacles and lighting appropriate to a damp or dusty environment. Permitted through L&I.

Do you charge for the drive to Pierce County?

Puyallup and South Hill are inside our normal service area, so no separate trip surcharge. Call 253-268-6287 and we will give you a straight answer on scheduling.
