North End, Hilltop, Proctor, Stadium — Tacoma runs its own inspections. Panels, EV chargers, generators, remodel wiring and the kind of troubleshooting that actually finds the problem.
Tacoma is the oldest housing stock we regularly work in, and it changes how a job is planned. The North End, Proctor, Stadium and Hilltop are full of pre-1940 homes: knob-and-tube in the attic and crawlspace, cloth-insulated wire, 60-amp or early 100-amp services, and panels that have been added onto three times. Tacoma also matters for a procedural reason — the City of Tacoma runs its own electrical permitting and inspection program rather than deferring to Washington State L&I, and Tacoma Power is a municipal utility with its own service-connection process.

Yes, and it is a real difference. Tacoma is one of the Washington cities that runs its own electrical inspection program, so permits and inspections go through the City of Tacoma rather than Washington State L&I. Service and meter work also has to be coordinated with Tacoma Power, which is a municipal utility. We handle both sides of that paperwork.
Insurers in Washington increasingly require active knob-and-tube to be removed or de-energized before they will renew. The work is a partial or full rewire: new grounded circuits pulled to the existing device locations, old circuits disconnected at the panel, and a documented, inspected permit at the end — which is usually what the insurer actually wants to see.
That is a routine job for us. It involves a load calculation, a new panel and meter base, grounding electrode work to current code, a City of Tacoma permit and inspection, and a scheduled Tacoma Power disconnect and reconnect. Expect the house to be without power for part of one day.
Yes — those neighborhoods are the majority of our Tacoma rewire work. Older lath-and-plaster walls make the fishing harder, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you a per-outlet price sight unseen.
More general Washington electrical questions — permits, code, costs, inspections — are answered on the electrical FAQ page.
